Tutors, memorization, flashcards -- if traditional study practices don't work, there's an alternative that might help children succeed in school. For some local students, hypnosis equals better grades and test scores.
Certified hypnotist D. Norvelle Roland helped Alex Stewart, 13, get rid of his test anxiety. He tapped into Alex's subconscious, where he does things automatically and without thinking.
"Our conscious mind is kind of like the gatekeeper; it's like the guard. It has analytical skills, critical thought. It thinks; it processes information. But our subconscious mind is our doing mind; it's where most things happen," Roland said.
Often students are stressed out at test time, so they shut down and can't remember information. Roland said that's where hypnotherapy can help.
It helps students "to relax, to understand that you do in fact have that confidence and have the ability to pass the test," he said.
"I used to be afraid of tests, but now I tell myself there is not a problem anymore 'cause it's nothing to worry about," Alex said.
Alex's parents said they see a noticable difference in their son and his grades. But hypnotherapy is not for everyone. One must be open to it for it to work.
It's no surprise that at this time of year -- FCAT season -- more parents are calling to inquire about hypnotherapy for their kids. Roland said that's because hypnosis can show results right away, whereas counseling can take several sessions.
"Hypnosis is a quick way, a safe and natural way, to really make a change positive change," he said.
Sessions for students start at $80 and last about an hour and a half. Roland said after just one session, some students have improved two letter grades. He said parents see the students' difference not only in the classroom, but also in their everyday life.
